Participating in Oglethorpe University’s exciting first-year experience starts you on a voyage bound for college success. It is made up of academic, out-of-classroom, and experiential learning throughout the year that engages you in Oglethorpe’s signature student opportunities and prepares you to make a life, make a living, and make a difference.
Programs like Admitted Students Day, Making A Petrel (MAP) Days, Welcome Weekend, Compass Advising, Convocation, Orientation Day of Service, Academic Success, Residence Halls, Student Engagement and Leadership, Study Abroad, and other first-year initiatives focus on:
- Habits of mind and communication needed for success in the university and beyond
- Engaging in Oglethorpe’s diverse cultural life
- Integration of knowledge gained in courses, experiences, and student life
- Exploring professional and civic responsibilities as an educated person
As committed as we are to students, we’re just as excited about informing their families. We provide parents and family members with the necessary tools and support to help facilitate a successful transition for their student by hosting parent sessions during certain Orientation Events. Family Weekend is an important part of our parent programming and occurs every fall semester during the first full weekend of October.
All first-year experience programs are successful with the help of our student leaders. For more information in student leadership opportunities, please visit Student Engagement & Leadership.
There is much to look forward to during your first year at Oglethorpe. First-year experience programs connect you to outstanding faculty, staff, and fellow students. We invite you to read more about our events and to contact us with questions. We look forward to seeing what you achieve as a Stormy Petrel.
