Fall Orientation

Orientation is designed to help you make connections and to prepare you for a successful fall semester. These sessions are for New Students Only! While we love our Ogle family – Orientation is a time for New Students to learn about our community and connect with each other.

We look forward to seeing you at all the events! Those identified with an asterisk(*) and underlined text are mandatory. If you’re experiencing “Zoom fatigue” or cannot attend a live event, links to the recordings will be made available in OU Connect and in the CORQ app.

Students who attend all events and check in through the CORQ app will receive coveted OU swag. All sessions take place in Eastern Standard Time (EST).

*7 p.m. – Welcome from the Oglethorpe Student Involvement team and your Orientation Leaders (MANDATORY)

We’ll share an overview of your Orientation schedule, introduce the O-Book, and engage in small group activities.


8:30 p.m. – Remote Group Watch Party!

Scooby and the gang face their biggest, most challenging mystery ever: a plot to unleash the ghost dog Cerberus upon the world. As they race to stop this global “dogpocalypse,” the gang discovers that Scooby has a secret legacy and an epic destiny greater than anyone imagined.

9:45 a.m. – Check your BAND messages! Orientation Leaders will send you a message with instructions for next steps!


*10 a.m. – Playfair (MANDATORY)

Playfair is a high-spirited, high-energy event to help everyone feel part of Oglethorpe’s exciting community. It is a mix of team building, comedy, and lots of fun!

In these sessions you’ll meet several Oglethorpe staff leading efforts to extend your learning beyond the classroom and are will help prepare you for academic and personal success!

*11:15 a.m. – Beyond the Classroom (MANDATORY)

Learning doesn’t stop when students leave the classroom. Civic Engagement, Global Education, and the A_LAB fill the spaces between classes to facilitate learning in a co-curricular and experiential way. Join Dr. Marisa Atencio and Dr. Matt Wild to find out about ways to stay involved and engaged beyond the classroom.

 

 


*1:15 p.m. – Navigating Remote Classes (MANDATORY)

Join Cecil Rose, Associate Director of Academic Success, and Blair Fortson, Academic Advisor from Academic Success to reflect on what works best for you to be a successful remote learner in terms of workspace, technology, organization and time management, communication, and self-care.

 

 


*2:15 p.m. – Exploring and Choosing your Major (MANDATORY)

Explore with Asia Anderson, Assistant Director of Career Development and Nicole Kang ’13, Career Development Employer Relations Manager, all the possibilities with your major! Become familiar with the Career Development office, what we offer, how we can help you prepare for your professional journey after OU.

 

 


*3:15 p.m. – Campus Jobs, Work study and More (MANDATORY)

Learn with Erin Sherrill, Director of Career Development about internship/ job opportunities available to you on- and off- campus using Handshake! We will walk you through how to setup your Handshake profile and how to get a jumpstart on the job search process.

 


*4:15 p.m. – Safety and Wellness (MANDATORY)

Your health and safety are so important! Join Dr. Claire Fuller Director of Counseling Services, Dwayne Smalls Director of Campus Safety, Dr. Natasha Byrd Associate Director of Residence Life, and Rachael Clark, Assistant Director of Campus Life / Title IX Coordinator for a meet-and-greet and discussion on campus resources including the Counseling Center, Campus Safety, Wellness and the Title IX Office. We want to be sure you are well-informed on how to take the best care of yourself this fall semester in a healthy and safe manner.

7:30 p.m. – Oglethorpe Virtual Escape Rooms

Choose your experience:

Option 1: CSI

Tommy Bennetti, a local crime boss, has hired you to discover the identity of two people who committed a crime at his club last Tuesday. Tommy’s tech guy has hacked into the police database to give your group access to all the collected evidence. Your group must sort through all the evidence before the cops trace the connection back to Tommy. Players will have access to select mob members via chat to answer any questions as they sift through the evidence.

Option 2: The Exit Files

The Exit Files is a difficult game of puzzle mastery in teams of 10 people with gamemasters available for hints and to check on players during the game. Some of the puzzles are easy, some are difficult. “It was a strange day when you received an email from your eccentric uncle. Uncle John was a game designer who became very wealthy but kept to himself. Nobody in the family had seen him in years. Can your team solve the puzzles and win your Uncle’s fortune?”

9 a.m. – Morning Meditation and Wellness (choose one of the following options)

Option One: Live Interfaith Worship Experience

Oglethorpe encourages all students embracing their faith and spirituality. Join Kathryn Folk, our Volunteer Campus Minister for a non-denominational worship service. Members of all faith groups are welcome.

 

Option Two: Meditative Activity

Your mental health and overall wellbeing are always so important! Please join Dr. Claire Fuller and Dr. Natasha Byrd for a guided mindfulness exercise and a review of strategies and resources to help alleviate stress and support wellness. All are welcome.

 

 

Option Three: Self-Guided Meditations

If you are unable to join us, here are some resources for free guided meditations to try on your own.

We will focus on individual behaviors and the impact of personal actions on yourself and others. We’ll spend this time together building awareness, knowledge, and skills to support your ability to make good decisions, lead to productive behaviors, and establish your OU legacy. These sessions will be facilitated in two groups (A and B) between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Check BAND for announcements and to find out your group assignment. *10 a.m. – Shot of Reality (MANDATORY)

This performance is created out of serious and painstaking research on alcohol and substances. Performed by two professional comedians, the show delivers impactful education through a powerful combination of levity and realistic discussion.

*11 a.m. – OU Uncensored (MANDATORY)

During this breakout session the Orientation Leaders will debrief Shot of Reality and allow students to ask any other questions about Oglethorpe such as, what are classes like? How can I get connected? What OLs wish they knew their first year? Want to know the OU real deal? Ask an Orientation Leader.


*1:30 p.m. – Darryl Bellamy – Fearless First Years (MANDATORY)

Darryl has collected, read, and shared thousands of students’ fears on campuses all over the country. He prides himself in reading every fear, which keeps him connected with what students are feeling and at times, hiding. His energy is infectious, and Darryl will move you from fearful to fearless.

Darryl Bellamy graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2012, and three years later became a Corporate America dropout after quitting his job to travel the country inspiring students to conquer their fears and self-doubt. His presentation will be followed by Q&A.

*4 p.m. – Oglethorpe Diversity Panel (MANDATORY)

We will reunite as a full group to meet with students representing several organizations at Oglethorpe and how to get involved. President Ladany is committed to Diversity and his initiatives start with the Class of 2024 and other new students. During this session, students will have the opportunity to learn and ask questions about clubs, organizations, and resources. Want to start you own club – find out how here!

8 p.m. – Team Trivia

Come engage in the brain teasing experience with the live and virtual experience of Team Trivia. Prizes will be offered!

Tim Mousseau is a friend to Oglethorpe and has focused his career on sexual violence prevention and masculinity on college campuses. Counseling Services will be available to all students from 10 a.m. – noon and again 1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. today. Zoom links will be provided in BAND and CORQ.
